The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. The Newberry’s establishment came about because of a contingent provision in the will of Chicago businessman Walter L. Chicago newspaper correspondent and author. James O'Donnell Bennet was born in Jackson, Michigan in 1870. He was a war correspondent during the Spanish war, dramatic and literary critic of the Chicago record-herald, later on the Chicago tribune, and won fame as correspondent in the World War.
